Keeping the Air Conditioning Running
There are a number of ways that you can ensure your air conditioning unit stays running as long as possible. Generally speaking, the easiest of these tasks is to simply change the air filter as needed. Some homes need the filter changed every 6-12 months, while others need the filter changed every 20-45 days. The frequency of changes depends on several factors including the number of people and pets in the home, whether or not someone suffers from allergies, and the amount of pollution outside.
The other major part of keeping your air conditioning running is to stay current with its maintenance. Professional maintenance can include cleaning in and around the air handler, inspecting ductwork, ensuring that evaporator and condenser coils are functioning properly with no leaks, and inspecting thermostats.
When to Replace an Air Conditioner
It’s unlikely that you want to wait until your air conditioner completely breaks before replacing it. However, it is also unlikely that you want to replace the unit when it still has months or years of life left. To decide when to replace your air conditioner, here are a few considerations:
- AGE OF THE UNIT– air conditioners don’t typically last for more than 15 years, but this doesn’t mean the unit will absolutely last for this amount of time, it is simply an average
- REPAIR COST– when your unit isn’t quite 15 years old but is nearing that age in a few short years, consider the cost of repairs. If the cost of the repair is extremely high, it may not be worth doing on an older unit
- TYPE OF REFRIGERANT– R-22 is an older type of refrigerant that is still used in AC units, however, is being phased out. If your AC unit uses this type of refrigerant instead of the newer R-410A, consider upgrading to a newer unit
- HIGH ENERGY COSTS– using the same amount of energy over several months should average out to about the same costs. Unfortunately, as AC units age, they become less efficient which means higher electric bills
